Aurora Halal is an artist whose work creates worlds. Known for her hardware live sets and immersive DJ performances, Halal invites listeners into a realm that fuses shadowy sensuality, deep emotional resonance and playful surprises. Halal's sound is fluid yet exacting - an open-minded definition of psychedelic techno that pulses with intuition, grit, and infectious energy while smoothly exploring many musical terrains. Rooted in New York, she's known for creating space for the underground to thrive through Sustain-Release, the upstate festival she founded 10 years ago, and her influential party series Mutual Dreaming. Across these platforms, she's championed a vision of dance music that is raw, complex and spiritually charged, all while being entirely DIY and community-run.
A Japanese DJ, born and raised at the foot of Mt.Fuji, Shizuoka. Cutting his teeth on spinning vinyls in '90s, dj masda has steadily developed his deeper exploration of house and techno.
Not to mention his diverse, flawless track selection and precise mixing that integrates best bits from the old to the new, it’s easy to see why he is respected as one of the finest selector amongst Japanese underground scene if you catch him playing or his highly-rated podcast mixes.
A decade deep in Stroom, and a lifetime steeped in notes - Belgian DJ Nosedrip moves in his own current, reading the times on his peculiar frequency. Stroom, his label, carries a sense of modern nostalgia wrapped in a dreamlike haze of youth, setting it apart from other platforms that hover between reissuing forgotten treasures and presenting contemporary testaments of tonal love across ambient, electronic, experimental, indie, and avant-pop spheres.
As a DJ, Nosedrip ingeniously folds all of this into his sets, pulling people into energizing genre unifying flashes, that most DJs wouldn't dare touch. But there's also another side - the Nosedrip that dives headfirst into techno, house, breaks, and the endless zones in between. He can be your go-to wave pop selector, while same time jacking new beat the Belgian way. His NTS show often takes on a quieter tone, leaning into the contemplative ambient space between the weekend's grime and glow - the in-between zone where Nosedrip turns dancefloors into collective dreamscapes with sets, that draw dancers into strange, shifting places, where bizarre rhythms, hypnotic pulses, and a hazy kind of sexiness weave their spell on body and spirit.
Solstice Festival takes place at the top of a mountain in the remote north of Finland during the magic weekend of the year when the sun never goes down, casting a transcendent perma-sunrise-sunset glow on its revelers. Sustain-Release while closer to the urban metropolis of chaotic NYC, has a similar glow of creator and attendee intentionality, the light glowing from the moon and neon in the forest. These two unique festivals are heads-only, 2000 capacity intimate parties where underground sounds in all creative directions are free to be themselves, as are the dancers who enjoy being surprised by new movements and musical ideas. For their first collaboration, Open Ground was the ideal place, a destination venue prioritizing unique storytelling DJs and soundsystem culture.
For this night the main room welcomes an extended closing set from DJ Masda, a masterful trip-sitter of a DJ from Japan via Berlin, whose music is eerie and seductive house/electro/undefinable grooves that are evocative and addictive to dance to. Sustain’s creator Aurora Halal has a similar yin yang of dark and light to her music, creating propulsive journeys with intuitive warmth through twists and turns of colorful techno. Arthur works the Open Ground sound system with a deep & crisp amapiano selection.
In the second room, Nosedrip, the Stroom label boss and a deejay extraordinaire has bended minds at both Solstice and Sustain, and comes down to close the Annex floor with an extended set – expect anything but the expected. Sansibar, the uncrowned king of modern techno-bass presents his new dubby and chuggy Sans-i live project, while Solstice founders Denzel & Joni DJ will set the tone with their long opening set.
Come early, stay late, bring a crew and an open mind.
