“Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His is a tough techno sound with an industrial murk about it but also plenty of funk, swing and a sophisticated sense of dub-space learned in part from his Chain Reaction contemporaries in Berlin. Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, the influence of Surgeon on the current Ostgut/Berghain sound – DJs/producers like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al – is substantial”. (Fact Magazine)
Surgeon is a selector of some skill and one of the most inventive, intuitive DJs out there. Using techno as a vehicle to carry his artistic message, he also mixes up everything from contemporary bass music to Rephlex-esque electronica to create a coherent, intense and righteously banging whole. More recently live improvisation has become a more important part of all of his performances.
Quelza, counts as one of the most satisfyingly mature young guns to emerge out the new wave of techno artists that’s been unfurling in recent times, with an exquisitely panoramic view into his mental multiverse. Championing layered techno wares laced with a breaksy, IDM-informed touch that packs a punch, the Frenchman keeps on carving out a truly distinctive, shape-shifting signature, switching scopes and angles as he ups the rhythmic pressure with every next sequence.
Lumatraxx is the live hardware collaboration between maruhni and ALS420 two producers from Wuppertal, active in the city’s independent scene through the Mauke collective and its live sessions. For this edition of Openground, they join forces with the Mogul Soundsystem crew to host the Annex Floor combining raw live electronics with a deep-rooted sound system ethos.
Lumatraxx setup is built around semimodular and standalone hardware. Their sets rely on structured improvisation: rhythmic frameworks evolve in real time through modulation, live sequencing, and hands-on manipulation. No playback, no templates just instinct, repetition, and controlled unpredictability.
The sound moves between low frequencies, broken drum patterns, and lo-fi dub textures. Always direct, always physical shaped by the room, the system, and the moment.
Admission 20 € / before 11 pm 15 €
