"-Larry McCarthy creates postmodern rhythmic drama at the burning intersection of UK dance music.
Bruce's music operates at all speeds without any predictable formula. Some tracks stutter and thump with cybernetic power; others flutter and glide in poignant shades of blurring colour. It’s a fragmented, low-frequency meltdown, evocative shimmers of light emanating from the cracks. Sometimes what you're listening to is suddenly scraped off and wiped away, leaving only silence as you blink in disbelief.
With a deep understanding of tension and release - essential for thrills and head-spins - McCarthy has been a fundamental force in the continuing output of the pioneering label collective Hessle Audio since his 2014 debut. Since its inception, McCarthy has been also a close affiliate of the Timedance label, where he’s continued to expand his sound, along with Livity Sound and Hemlock.
McCarthy’s hyperactive and surreal humour allows him to recreate the process of converting experimental abstraction into exhilarating energy when he’s performing as a DJ. His nuanced dancefloor approach has already taken him on tour as far as Japan. He further explores his own marriage of heartfelt music and daft humour via his monthly Noods Radio show, ‘Get Loose! With Bruce,’ coyly lassoing together various sonic phenomena that inspire his music.-"
re:ni is the alias of Lauren Reni Bush, a DJ & producer based in South East London. Born in Birmingham and later raised in Dorset, re:ni's sub-heavy sound marries deep, dank dub sonics with dark & twisted mutations of techno, jungle and dubstep, characteristic of her label, party and radio show "re:lax" which she runs with Hessle Audio affiliate Laksa. Following her steady rise as an internationally recognised DJ, having played institutions like De School, fabric and Panorama Bar multiple times, re:ni released her debut 12" Revenge Body on Ilian Tape in 2022. This year saw the release of her second EP BeautySick which came out via Batu's Timedance label, as well as her first 12" on her own imprint.
Few artists have encapsulated the Timedance ethos and sonics as well as Metrist over the years : starting ten years ago with the label’s second release, his palette and approach to production has become instrumental in defining Timedance’s DNA, and organically developed into the crucial ‘Pollen’ trilogy which came to a close in 2023. Over time, we’ve remained completely in awe of Metrist’s explorations and artistry, and couldn’t be happier to host one of the very first iterations of a long-awaited live-set, folding together sound art and electro-acoustic with the many tendrils of the dance music giant squid to form an atemporal wall of sound.
Yushh has quickly carved out a distinct space for her weird, wonky sound. Her dubbed-out, atmospheric compositions are unmistakable. Focusing primarily on sound system-indebted low ends and phantasmic melodic details, they give the illusion of comprising infinite layers of sound; no eight-bar mimicking the last as if we’re listening to her experiment in real time.
Timedance owner Batu has carved out a unique sound for himself since his debut in 2013. Subsequent 12″s on a number of labels including XL Recordings, Hessle Audio and his own Timedance imprint have found him grounded in British bassbin principles. His style however is relentlessly forward thinking, and pushing his sound in adventurous, inventive ways that have become something of a signature aesthetic. Batu and his tight-knit Timedance label continue to push the boundaries, putting Bristol firmly at the center of global bass-minded music culture.
Never content to sit still in the expected, k means likes to throw you in at the deep end. having honed their skill over hours of on-air experimentation for Noods Radio and Rinse FM, k means has settled on a style spun more from texture and mood than any specific tempo or genre. As a resident at Bristol’s mind-expanding Psychotherapy Sessions, their commitment to the fringes is borne out in an omnivorous appetite for sound, an exploratory approach that sees the selector navigating the wildest terrain and loosest vibes while maintaining a laser focus on the dance floor, spinning you out only to snap you back in.
Nowadays the Bristol-based DJ finds themselves ebbing and flowing elegantly between the rush of the club and more experimental spirals, drawn deep into the amphibian ooze of the most lysergic and cacophonous corners of the musical spectrum - constantly keeping you at a simmer, burbling between unease & release, throbbing tension and low-slung sleaze, finding delicate balance between the dark, the disorientating, the steamy and the sweat-slicked.
Anyone who’s ever heard a set from carin kelly knows how easily the Rinse Fm resident glides from rhythm to rhythm. Influenced by both uk and us bass music, her percussive sets are vibrant, simultaneously exploring hypnotic rhythms and groove, and catches dancefloors off guard with her ingenious blending of tempos and genres. carin kelly knows her classics and she rarely goes where we expect her to - far from a traditional set- building, for the best.
Glasgow’s Bake is a revered DJ with a local heart and global mind, celebrated as a beacon of musical humility embarking on a new era through his iconic Rinse FM residency and Spirit party series.
Discovering dubstep at Glasgow’s The Art School, co-founding the seminal All Caps label and a subsequent whirlwind decade spent touring clubs globally has all shaped Bake to result in his now most settled form. It’s a testament to his sustained omnipresence within the global communities of dance music, an unwavering vitality of voice that continues to be a remarkable presentationary feat of frequency and sound.
A typical set finds selections weaving together like aural figments reconnected, akin to meeting an old friend through a door wide to discoveries old and new; forever welcomed and never estranged.
Freifeld will see an all-star cast of Timedance legends both old and new. A night built around bass-weight, rhythmic complexity and leftfield pressure — where dub-infused techno, broken beats, abstract sound design and mutated UK club styles collide. Expect deep subs, warped textures and unpredictable shifts, all rooted in the soundsystem tradition and pushed far into the future.
From Bruce at the start of the journey and Batu bringing it to a close. New recruits re:ni and Yushh also join the line up, and Metrist plays his new singular live-set in the EU for the first time.
For the final date of our 10 years anniversary tour, Timedance takes things to a close with a very special family gathering in Wuppertal — the only date in Germany for the year — and takes over Open Ground for an extended club-night running from 8:00pm to 6:00am.
Annex:
