Tanz Mein Herz
Circumnavigating the scene around the pioneering label Standard In-Fi, which has been exploring new experimental territories for over a decade, Tanz Mein Herz is one of the most exciting musical expressions of this movement.
Emerging from the same cosmos as the drone-folk trio France – where the ancient hurdy-gurdy meets expanded electroacoustic techniques – Tanz Mein Herz embraces this tradition while simultaneously transcending it. This collective of musicians not only shares geographical roots in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, but also a common attitude: music is alive, political, and constantly evolving; it arises from the direct exchange between people, not from a preserved past.
In the context of a scene that doesn't simply preserve traditional forms but reimagines them, Tanz Mein Herz stands for minimalism that oscillates between Tony Conrad and contemporary folk innovation. They rarely play live, which is why we are all the more excited to experience them this evening in the unique sound of Freifeld.

Jules and Sam weave intricate microtonal guitar and clarinet lines together with dense washes of spectral synthesis and field recordings. The result: a warp-and-weft of two unique musical identities, figures becoming ground, subjects diffusing and dissolving into environments, always on the edge of becoming something new and then…. Becoming something else…
The performance at Open Ground marks the debut presentation of their duo project. After many years of collaboration in various musical contexts, Reidy and Dunscombe bring their shared musical language to the stage as a dedicated duo for the first time.
Sam Dunscombe is a Tone Ingénue working at the crossroads of experimental music, audio engineering, and spectralism. Sam has a keen interest in the ways that music allows for novel experiences of time, which has led to explorations in sound synthesis, just-intonation, improvisation, the performance of complex-notated repertoire, field recording, studio engineering, computer programming, and live electronic performance.
Dunscombe has performed worldwide at festivals and concert series, including conducting the opening night of MaerzMusik 2019 in Berlin, solo performances at Supersense! in Melbourne, a performance-installation at the Tokyo Experimental Festival, and performances of music by Eliane Radigue at the Berlin Philharmonie.
Recordings by Dunscombe have been released on Black Truffle, Mode, Another Timbre, Ferns, Editions Wandelweiser, Ftarri, and he is a member of several ensembles, including Harmonic Space Orchestra Berlin, Golden Fur (with James Rushford and Judith Hamann), Oren Ambarchi’s Carpe Diem, and maintains duo projects with Michiko Ogawa, Rebecca Lane, Jules Reidy, and others.
Jules Reidy works across song cycles and electro-acoustic composition for solo performance, ensembles and spaces. Their music explores devotional love, transcendence, and ego death, invoking states of uncanniness, dissociation, imagination, and void.
They’ve released on Thrill Jockey, Black Truffle, Shelter Press, Editions Mego and Longform Editions.
Their current collaborations include projects with Sun Kit (shoegaze pop), Judith Hamann (karaoke-inspired music for cello and guitar) , Andrea Belfi (folk-ish jam duo), Sam Dunscombe (psychedelic environments made up of synthesis, clarinets, guitar), David Grubbs, Jan St. Werner (episodic compositions for guitars and electronics) and Ivan Cheng (sincere, maudlin, twee, fabulous).
They're also a member of the Pitch and Oren Ambarchi's various large ensembles.
They've recently written for Zinc&Copper, JACK Quartet and the Australian Art Orchestra.
They are originally from Australia, and are currently based in Berlin.
Iriai Verlag, a Berlin & Cologne-based label and platform for experimental music culture, invites you to an evening concert at Open Ground. An evening where improvised soundscapes, overtones, and rhythm intertwine in an intense way.
Between microtonal guitar and precise sound manipulation of Jules Reidy & Sam Dunscombe also encounter the trance-like, collective compositions of the band Tanz Mein Herz.
