Olaf Karnik works primarily as an author, journalist and critic for the press and radio in Cologne. He has played in several bands and has been DJing since 1985.
David Katz, an author born in San Francisco who has lived in London since the 1980s, is best known for his in-depth biographies (Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s *People Funny Boy*) and historical accounts of Jamaican music history (*Dub Revolution*). He also works as a documentary filmmaker, photographer and original reggae vinyl DJ.
The project was conceived specifically for this event. Jorik Bergman, a composer and arranger from the Netherlands, has been associated with the Week-End Fest festival for five years and therefore needed to bring a wide variety of projects to the stage, including, amongst others, a tribute to pioneering Studio 54-era disco tracks by Arthur Russell, a work by the New York-based contemporary composer Julius Eastman, and a collaboration with the Brazilian feminist icon Joyce, for whom she wrote string arrangements. For this event, she is putting together a band especially for the occasion and will accompany them as a flautist to perform a selection of tracks from the iconic album.

First released in Jamaica in late 1972, Upsetters 14 Dub Black Board Jungle – produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry and mixed by King Tubby – is widely regarded as one of the first full-length dub albums and a true landmark in reggae history. It established dub as a genre defined by creative studio intervention. Now, 54 years later, Cologne-based label Week-End Records is excited to re-release this monumental album in its original version featuring all 14 tracks.
The album’s newly restored master will be presented in its entirety during an album listening session on the club’s Freifeld floor. David Katz, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s biographer and author of Dub Revolution, will give an introduction, followed by a Q&A.
With U14DBBJ, a group of musicians led by composer and arranger Jorik Bergman will perform selected tracks of this iconic album live, and our dear friend Olaf Karnik will play a DJ-set, framing the afternoon.
Week-End Records carries forward the artistic vision and musical ethos of the annual Week-End Fest, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year from November 5-7.
